# Orientation Episodes: Journey to Regenerative Civilizations

For those new here and seeking a broad understanding of what's going on here. We highly recommend exploring this orientation series to give context before diving deeper.&#x20;

![](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FXwaBuNgzrENQKBMbNVs4%2FEp.%204_%20COORDINATION%20REGENERATION%20-%20Journey%20to%20Regens%20Civilization%20Series%20%20\(3\).jpg?alt=media\&token=44fe3ea8-7ff8-426c-b6df-37f552bfbd62)

## Episode 1

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/YrNw_PdJd68>" %}

Explore key insights from an 11+ year journey into the Regenerative Renaissance as an ever growing number of people have come together to collectively ask:

* How can we build the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible?
* How can we design new economic and governance systems to coordinate the systemic regeneration and reunion with Earth?

We've been building, iterating, evolving, and testing a variety of approaches over the last 11 years that we'll explore.

We open source one of our most valuable assets, our knowledge (and tools, code, and everything else), so that other "competing" ecosystems may learn with the SEEDS ecosystem together, as our only actual competition is the degenerative economic systems we were **all born into.**

Our shared task is to make them obsolete by creating economic systems that are regenerative by design. SEEDS has been exploring one pathway to Regenerative Civilizations starting with permaculture, ecovillages and regenerative food systems and moving into decentralised and regenerative financial, organization, and economic systems we take you on a journey through 11 years of learning.

## Episode 2

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/v_k3-srWKnY>" %}

Exploring tools designed from the ground up to help communities co-create regenerative, circular, & local economic, organizational, & governance systems.

Or in other words, exploring the tools that provide the foundation to our "Minimum Viable Regenerative Civilization". We can use these tools to opt-out of the dominant and degenerative economic systems and explore creating and discovering alternatives.\
\
OPEN SOURCE TOOLS

* Community currencies&#x20;
* Regenerative economic and financial system tools
* Digital and decentralised marketplaces&#x20;

## Episode 3

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/GcglnJmkXLI>" %}

Exploring how we opt-into a Regenerative Economy:

* how the tools of Ep. 2 act as a "minimum viable regenerative economy",
* the SEEDS Economic System,
* how the SEEDS Commons works to distribute 'working capital' to the ecosystem,
* the basics of contributing, tokens, and more,
* and introduces the foundations of regenerative economic systems and regenerative communities.

Exploring the question "How can we practically coordinate the systemic regeneration of our earth?" \
\
The last 3 episodes explored our journey, tools, and basics for a "Minimum Viable Regenerative Economy".

This episode explores how can we use these tools to support our global transition to Regenerative Civilizations, Cultures, Communities and beyond.&#x20;

## An evolving compass and recipe book

Welcome to the universe of SEEDS, what you see here is an ongoing effort to meet the community's demand for a map to navigate this new world.

**Section 1** is our foundations and agreements. These are the official organizing patterns that we have collectively created and agreed to. They are evolved through decentralised governance in order to create coherence and shared agreements for our foundations.

**Section 2** provides resources and maps to help us see more of the whole movement.

**Section 3** provides resources for regenerative action to help those on-the-ground with systems change.

**Section 4** provides resources for organising our groups and organisations.&#x20;

**Section 5** provides resources for coordinating at scale and building new economic systems.

**Section 6** provides resources for regenerative living.&#x20;

**Section 7** explores the SEEDS Commons and how it functions as a coordination hub for our movement.\
\
Sections 2-6 contain "recipes" opposed to "rules" or "agreements" as they offer support, templates, resources, and guides to help us along our way. While section 1 and 7 are governed by the Citizens of SEEDS.

*We can continue to map and track the templates, strategies, practices, and protocols that support us in living a more generative, purposeful, joyful, and regenerative life as we explore, map, and navigate this new world together.*

## This is Our Common Knowledge Base for mapping our journey to a Regenerative Civilization!&#x20;

'Regenerative' means different things to different people in different contexts. As such, we endeavor to gain a better understanding of Regeneration (social, ecological, etc) through a synthesis of perspectives as patterns emerge when we learn together.

We co-create a clearer picture of what a 'Regenerative Civilization' looks like as we weave more perspectives from the diversity of organisations, actions, causes, and communities all striving to create [The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible](https://charleseisenstein.org/books/the-more-beautiful-world-our-hearts-know-is-possible/).

{% hint style="info" %}
We encourage you to contribute your wisdom and perspectives into the various spaces throughout our 'Knowledge Base' to make our story more complete.
{% endhint %}

[Click here to learn more about contributing](/read-me-first/governance-and-contributing/contributing-to-the-knowledge-base).

# 1. SEEDS Foundations

This space contains our foundational agreements. Who we are, what we're here for, and how we're going to get there.&#x20;

As well as detailing the various protocols and settings found within our financial, economic, and governance systems.&#x20;

**As a Citizen-governed ecosystem all the settings and protocols found in our foundations are up for evolution.**&#x20;

However, each change requires the community vote that change through an official "referendum". A referendum happens as an on-chain vote (meaning the vote results are fraud-resistant and transparent).&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
These documents, and any change to our foundations, requires a vote from the Citizens to initially ratify and alter. &#x20;
{% endhint %}

This clarity on our core agreements help us scale our coordination potential as new organisations and people joining the economy can gain a full understanding of what we have already agreed to.

As a global community our goal is to continue to negotiate and refine these agreements as we mature.

# 5. Regenerative Economic System tools

{% hint style="info" %}
Resources and tools for building new economic and social systems.
{% endhint %}

Here we find a variety of templates and resources for creating new economic systems.

For example

* ["Tools for Regenerative Economic Systems"](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/) - An overview of the tools offered within the SEEDS Economic system such as:
  * "SEEDS Gratitude" - Explore the Gratitude token. A tool  and ongoing experiment within SEEDS to more joyfully and equitable distribute value, recognize contributions, and more within our community&#x20;
  * "Rainbow Seeds" - Explore the Rainbow Seeds tool and how communities can use it to create their own community currencies

### Yin and Yang tools: Economies in balance

**QUEST**\
Write and link articles expanding more on Yin and Yang currencies and economic tools.\
\
*Learn about* [*Quests here.*](/read-me-first/governance-and-contributing/contributing-to-the-knowledge-base)
{% endhint %}

#### Ex. Yang Currencies&#x20;

* [Seeds tokens ](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/)(financial currency): A currency designed to keep low barriers of participation by behaving most like the money of the dominant economic systems people are used to (while removing the most degenerative components like usury, fees, and how new currency is distributed).
* [Voice tokens](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/) (governance currency): A non-exchangeable currency that's also designed to lower barriers of participation by behaving like direct democracy (voting) that's occasionally found within the dominant political systems. Where Citizens earn voice and use this currency to govern the evolution of SEEDS.

#### Ex. Yin Currencies&#x20;

* [Contribution Points](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/) (financial & social currency): A tool for tracking and compensating a wide number of contributions to people, planet and our shared prosperity. Contribution Points and Scores are used to distribute common value (such as any new Seeds created) for rewarding contributions to the wellbeing of our economy and society.
* [Gratitude Acknowledgements ](broken://spaces/ZmME42Y3R9tnXjiRBQvQ)(governance & social currency): A tool for crowdsourcing where value should flow throughout our economy and giving people a means of sharing value without losing value themselves (the opposite of what happens when you use yang currencies). Every Citizen and Resident is given Gratitude tokens at the start of each month - these tokens are only meaningful \*after\* they send them to someone else (just like giving a compliment, it doesn't work if you hold onto it).

# 6. Regenerative Culture Tools

{% hint style="info" %}
Open-source library of practices, protocols, resources and strategies for creating a healthier life.
{% endhint %}

Here we co-create a diversity of "practices" and "protocols" that have assisted us in living a more generative, purposeful, joyful, and regenerative life.&#x20;

We also can map various elements of a Regenerative Civilization, such as how we handle birth, death, and the various transition points through life.

We understand that systems change isn't going to happen simply by creating new tools. We also need to shift how we use these tools and evolve (and dare we say, improve) our relationship with Gaia.

We also need to shift our own perspectives and release degenerative patterns and protocols that inherited from the systems we were born into.&#x20;

This space is for all of us to openly share strategies and patterns that have worked for us so they may inspire and help others.

[GO THERE](https://app.gitbook.com/home)

# 7. The SEEDS Commons

{% hint style="info" %}
Here you can find a list of the SEEDS Commons organizations and what role they're playing in our economy.&#x20;

Members within SEEDS can explore these organizations to find ways to contribute and earn rewards for doing so.
{% endhint %}

The SEEDS Commons is an ongoing effort to redesign the role that nation states play in the stewardship of our commons.&#x20;

You can learn more about how the [SEEDS Commons operates here](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/7.-take-action-with-the-commons-organisations/).

![](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FCt3kRx7pArrUTpNAFNmp%2Fcommons.png?alt=media\&token=e7a9e9e8-97d0-418e-af2f-bbb79d03b8e0)

In short, Citizens decide which organizations are part of the 'SEEDS Commons' and these organizations govern the "SEEDS Sale" (when you [buy Seeds from joinseeds.earth](https://joinseeds.earth/buy-seeds)) and transparently use these funds to serve the Regenerative Renaissance and our shared commons in an infinite variety of ways.

*Commons organizations can use this area to update the SEEDS Community with what they're doing and bringing to SEEDS and Citizens can use this area to inform their votes for membership to the SEEDS Commons.*

## An ecosystem of DAOs and DHOs

[Groups within SEEDS may form organisation structures that we call DAO's or DHO's](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/4.-organisation-tools-daos-and-dhos/doing-a-dho-and-dao/).

DAO's are Decentralised Autonomous Organisations and DHO's are Decentralised Holonic/Human Organisations.&#x20;

They're 2 organisational tools employed within the SEEDS ecosystem to coordinate, distribute value, and make decisions in a fraud resistant, transparent, and secure way.

These groups can then propose to the Citizens of SEEDS to join the "[SEEDS Commons](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/7.-the-seeds-commons)" to earn renumeration for their contributions to our movement.

# Communication Channels

Where are we discussing SEEDS?

## Gitbook

**Gitbook ← You're here!**

{% hint style="info" %}
**Use the Gitbook to share long-form and long-term guides, templates, handbooks, maps, policy changes, etc.**

*Such as or a template for communities to follow to use SEEDS to set up a local food-backed economic systems with these tools.*
{% endhint %}

The Gitbooks is our 'user manual for the ecosystem'. The websites, socials, decks, videos, etc are all built by single organisations or individuals... Meaning, they're more limited perspectives of SEEDS.

We needed a shared source of truth to coordinate from.

Blockchain is fine for the economic stuff.

Discord is too chaotic, we needed a grounded, well curated, community Co-created, Regenerative Commons Compendium. Co-created by all of us and edited/curated by those voted in to hold those compensated roles by the community.

The curators roles are to keep it coherent and consistent for functionality.

## Intro

> "...people were generally more capable than we are at imagining alternative social orders and therefore had created societies against the state... They had self consciously organised in such a way, that the forms of arbitrary power and domination that we associate with 'advanced political systems' could never possibly emerge". - The Dawn of Everything&#x20;

*The Dawn of Everything is a book detailing what we know, and more importantly, what we don't know about the incredible diversity of human cultures, social structures, economic systems, and more of our forgotten past. It is part of the* [*many resources that have inspired SEEDS*](/read-me-first/further-exploration/inspiration-and-reading) *and sets the stage for what is currently happening today in what we call the "Regenerative Renaissance".*

**SEEDS is the practical application and experimentation of the many ideas shared in the** [**wisdom that has inspired us**](/read-me-first/further-exploration/inspiration-and-reading)**, as we work to co-create new types of economic systems for humanity.**

### Our task remains that of our ancestors

How do we scale our coordination efforts to achieve our goals while ensuring the systems we use are resistant to fraud, coercion, and hostile takeover by existing or future concentrations of power?

More importantly however, is how do we build social system that are Regenerative (ecologically and socially) by design, so that we can reverse the damage caused by the dominant social systems of the past few millennia?

#### This library is an open-source effort coordinated by the SEEDS movement to answer these questions.

> “Good questions do not have answers at all, let alone right or wrong ones.” - Nora Bateson, Small Arcs of Larger Circles

## The Regenerative Renaissance

Our software systems on our computers are updated weekly and our coordination tools for work have dramatically evolved in the last few decades from telephones to the internet.

Yet, our social systems (economic, political, etc) are stuck in centuries old logic and coordination technology.

Everywhere you look we see the fallout of the failure of these systems from climate breakdown to political unrest as our economic and political systems aren't designed to handle the complexity and enormity of the combined challenges we're facing. So, the failing systems remain paralyzed, like a deer in headlights they remained unmoved as they stare on certain death.

However, across the globe groups are coming together to practically experiment and build a diversity of alternative social systems. We're doing so using interoperable technology so we can more easily learn and evolve together.

Some call this global transition from degenerative and exploitative economies into regenerative, stewardship, and purpose based economies "the Great Transition" or Solarpunk & Gaiapunk, Permaculture/Sacred Economics, Late Stage Capitalism, "Transitory Inflation", and so many other names...&#x20;

**For now, we're calling this period the "Regenerative Renaissance".**&#x20;

## SEEDS started in...

2017; when a global team of permaculturists and activists set out help local food systems thrive.&#x20;

We wanted to make local, organic, regenerative, and **real** food the cheapest and most convenient food for people.&#x20;

As we believe food and how we nourish ourselves is at the heart of our personal and planetary health crises (many caused by our food systems and the lack of real nutrition in our food).

> “The destiny of nations depends on how they nourish themselves." -Jean Brillat-Savarin, Food Philosopher

We saw that in our global world and economy its no longer just destiny of a single nation, the destiny of humanity depends on how we nourish ourselves and our destiny looked bleak.

### Our founding premise was simple

We would provide communities with a citizen-governed financial system that could subsidize and support local food systems.&#x20;

Central banks [print trillions upon trillions of their currency units](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-01-24/central-banks-are-creating-bubbles-everywhere-in-the-pandemic) and use this money to subsidize and finance things that are harming humanity such as:&#x20;

* **Oil:** "[Fossil Fuels Received $5.9 Trillion In Subsidies in 2020](https://e360.yale.edu/digest/fossil-fuels-received-5-9-trillion-in-subsidies-in-2020-report-finds)",
* **Housing:** [Cental banks inflating the housing bubble](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-10/global-boom-in-house-prices-becomes-a-dilemma-for-central-banks) (outpricing houses for many),
* **Degenerative Agriculture:** "[Nearly all global farm subsidies harm people and planet](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/sep/14/global-farm-subsidies-damage-people-planet-un-climate-crisis-nature-inequality)";
* **Deforestation and fishery collapse:** "[20 Years of Money-Losing Timber Sales in the Tongass](https://www.taxpayer.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/TCS-Cutting-Our-Losses-2019-.pdf)" (not even profitable to clear-cut these last ancient forests, yet subsidies ensure the destruction continues);
* **War and murder:** ["Costs of the 20-year war on terror: $8 trillion and 900,000 deaths"](https://www.brown.edu/news/2021-09-01/costsofwar);
* **Bailouts for Wallstreet** **and the wealthy:** "'[No Lessons Have Been Learned.' Why the Trillion-Dollar Coronavirus Bailout Benefited the Rich"](https://time.com/5845116/coronavirus-bailout-rich-richer/)
* and the list goes on...&#x20;

**What if instead the people created their own central banks and used the power of money creation to subsidize things humanity actually needs, such as:**

* local regenerative agriculture,&#x20;
* free education,&#x20;
* trauma and relief support from war and ecosystem collapse,
* pollution remediation,&#x20;
* reforestation,
* circular economic systems,&#x20;
* and the list also goes on...

**This "simple" idea has grown into a movement taking on a task much more audacious, yet necessary, creating entirely new economic systems.**

> "Today's economy is divisive and *degenerative by default*. Tomorrow's economy must be distributive and *regenerative by design*." - Kate Raworth, Doughnut Economics

### **Citizen governed**

Most of us within SEEDS had never been a part of an open, emergent, and co-creative global process before.&#x20;

We weren't prepared for the explosion of creativity, generativity, and possibility that emerged as more people brought unique tools, pieces, and perspectives that they've been working on.&#x20;

We believed that our founding premise to be "Citizen Governed" was going to be able to help us evolve to best serve what the movment needed, if it were to be more than tools for local food systems.&#x20;

As more Citizens joined bringing their pieces the scope and audaciousness of the task we we're taking on grew. As did our capacity to achieve it.&#x20;

## Today SEEDS is...

an open-source, [Citizen-governed](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/3.-citizens-guide-and-the-regenerative-renaissance/), and regenerative economic system.&#x20;

It's an alternative to the dominant economic systems (capitalism) and social structures (nation states and corporations) many humans currently spend their entire lives living in.\
\
You can think of SEEDS as a "Startup Nation" that isn't restricted by a particular piece of land (yet many "[Villages](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/regen-civics-infinite-game/)" across the globe within SEEDS may steward their own land).

Or, more accurately we can call SEEDS a "Regenerative Culture" that has its own:

* [Constitution](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/);
* [Economic System](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/2.-the-seeds-guide/);
* [Financial System;](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/3.-citizens-guide-and-the-regenerative-renaissance/)
* [Organisational](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/4.-organisation-tools-daos-and-dhos/doing-a-dho-and-dao/) and [Governance Systems](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/3.-citizens-guide-and-the-regenerative-renaissance/);
* [Villages and land-based decentralised organisations](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/regen-civics-infinite-game/);
* [Media and storytelling](/read-me-first/more-key-resources/communication-channels);
* [Marketplaces ](https://localscale.org/seeds-digital-currency)and sharing platforms;
* and more, which are all detailed in [SEEDS Foundations](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/1.-seeds-foundations) and [other sections](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/recipe-book-for-a-regenerative-civilization).

Most accurately though, we can't actually say that SEEDS is just one thing, as it's an emergence that's been continually evolving (as more and more join and contribute their perspectives).

**However, we can say that SEEDS' role in the wider Regenerative Renaissance is to serve as an economic foundation for our global movement.**&#x20;

So, instead of organizations attempting systems change using the tools of the dominant systems:&#x20;

* traditional corporations,&#x20;
* capitalism,&#x20;
* central bank currencies,&#x20;
* zero-sum games,&#x20;
* etc....&#x20;

We instead co-create new tools that we're continually redesigning to be more regenerative to better support our shared goal of creating a more beautiful world.&#x20;

Then our movement can coordinate within our own economic systems and amplify our ability to impact change at the same level (or hopefully better) of nations today.

From here we get to co-create a wide diversity of new types of economic and social systems to actually solve the many global crises we're experiencing today.&#x20;

> To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” – Buckminster Fuller.

### We're catalyzing, uniting, and building regenerative economies

SEEDS is a 100% grassroots funded and decentralized ecosystem of people and organisations that are here for the shared purpose of creating healthier civilizations.&#x20;

That purpose is laid out beautifully in our [constitution](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/).&#x20;

> “We are all here to contribute our gifts toward something greater than ourselves, and will never be content unless we are.” - Charles Eisenstein, The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible

It doesn't appear people are in SEEDS to play competitive games and try to be the "1 platform to save humanity". Instead many seem to be here to collaborate and to experiment with healthier and more generative social systems. To bring their unique organisations, tools, resources, and wisdom and integrate it into the whole creating a more effective an generative ecosystem.

From this perspective we first seek to ally and partner with the tools our movement needs, before we put resources towards building them ourselves. The SEEDS Economy itself has set aside a pool of funds that Citizens can give to alliances so that they can be compensated should they provide their tools to the community (by open-sourcing the tools and integrating them into the community).&#x20;

### SEEDS is a community created movement&#x20;

**As you explore this space we encourage you to do so from an active perspective while you discover how SEEDS may be able to help you and your communities create regenerative, circular, purposeful, and stewardship-of-the-land based economic systems.**

This is not a new idea nor it was born with SEEDS. Ancestral economies had these values. Original nations around the globe know this and continue to live in harmony with these principles. SEEDS is an attempt to bring these ancestral and newly developed technologies together.

Exploring this space is a great first step into exploring the world of SEEDS and how you can get involved and join the broader Regenerative Renaissance.

### Solarpunk & Regen Villages art movements

Providing a diversity of art and visions for what a Regenerative Civilization of \~10B people may look like. Solarpunk cities and Regen Villages is providing a visual esthetic of a regenerative civilization, what SEEDS is bringing is an opensource approach to provide the coordination infrastructure, economic systems, constitutions, governance systems, and general coordination tools (DAOs and DHOs) to actively transition into Regenerative Cultures.

# Building Blocks of Civilization

### **Spirals**

From a wider lens it seems obvious what's going on here. &#x20;

[Evidence suggests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dawn_of_Everything) that humanity started with an incredibly diverse abundance of social systems employed by various tribes across time and space.&#x20;

Over time we've centralized into a few dominant (those who were the most hostile and agressive with expansion) economic models.

One thing we may be experiencing today is 'peak centralisation' as the expansion-fueled economic systems have reached their maximum limits of growth - as we have, for the first time in recorded history, a global economic system.

What we're seeing now is the start of a long decentralising process where we're once again moving towards a diversity of social systems that humans can choose to be a part of and to start meaningfully meeting their needs and living their lives within systems of their choosing. &#x20;

The beautiful thing about this time around is we're doing so within the context of a global civilization; where humans have more freedom of mobility and choice to discover which systems they would like to be a part of and best suit their vision and values.

### **Creating new societies is political**

Creating new societies is inherently political, as it requires us to have self-conscious and collective dialogues about the "proper" way to live.

In SEEDS we believe that being "regenerative" is the "proper" way to live.&#x20;

Problem is, we're not completely sure what "regenerative" means yet and we're only just beginning to explore what it means to have a globally regenerative economy.&#x20;

We can learn from pioneers like [R3.0](https://www.r3-0.org/), [Earthwise](https://www.earthwisecentre.org/anneloes-smitsman), [Buckminster Fuller Institute](https://www.bfi.org/), and [many others](/read-me-first/further-exploration/inspiration-and-reading) to establish a foundation into this world of study and to orient our initial economic theories around.&#x20;

While these groups are paving the path with knowledge, SEEDS is practically applying this knowledge to build tools for transition.&#x20;

Our [Constitution](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/) and [Guide](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/2.-the-seeds-guide/) are formal efforts to crystalize our learnings into a functional economic system as we continue to discover and create new social systems.

### Dogmas and 'shoulds'&#x20;

Regeneration is a continual exploration and not a dogma.

This space isn't to say how we **should** live our lives. Rather its an open library of successful patterns that we've all discovered in our quests to create more beautiful and regenerative social systems.&#x20;

By learning out loud, sharing effective templates, processes, strategies, and guides others in our movement can learn from our successes and avoid the traps we've already climbed out of.&#x20;

## Building blocks of civilization

### SEEDS an economic system & Seeds a currency

Just as Europe is so much more than the Euro, SEEDS (the ecosystem and economy) is so much more than Seeds (a single token within the economy).&#x20;

We like to think of it this way:&#x20;

* Regenerative Renaissance = Global movement to build Regenerative Civilizations (way bigger than just us).
* Seeds = one token with the SEEDS economic system that's most familiar to folks (like national currencies). However, there are **many** tokens within SEEDS, and the community is designing more all the time.&#x20;
* SEEDS = A Citizen-governed economic system to support the Regenerative Renaissance providing us with with many more economic tools beyond the Seeds currency; such as [Rainbow Seeds](broken://spaces/LyHiXbrp5fHx6gLjorGh), [Gratitude](broken://spaces/ZmME42Y3R9tnXjiRBQvQ), [Contribution Scores](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/) and [more](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/).&#x20;

*When you go to another country & economy today you exchange one currency (such as Euros) to the next (such as Pesos). Likewise when people enter the SEEDS economy they may exchange their local currencies to Seeds to do so.*&#x20;

### Building blocks of civilization

For example, we can think of Bitcoin as an alternative financial system (alternative to the USD and the Fed, Euro and ECB, etc) while SEEDS is an alternative economic system (alternative to capitalism, mercantilism, feudalism, communism, etc).&#x20;

#### Economic systems&#x20;

SEEDS (Seeding Equitable, Ecological and Decentralised Societies) / Capitalism / Feudalism / the many Gift and Sharing Economies / etc.

*Provides foundations for...*&#x20;

#### Financial systems&#x20;

Seeds (the token, and other tokens & currencies within SEEDS) / Euros / Pesos / Bitcoin / Reputation / Mutual Credit / Karma / etc.

*Provides foundations for...*

#### Firms & Organizational systems&#x20;

DAO's & DHO's (decentralised and directly democratic organisations) / Corporations / NPOs / NGOs / Charities / Tribes / etc.

*Where we spend a significant part of our lives and energy...*

### A global economy in transition&#x20;

One goal within SEEDS is to use new types of economic building blocks to help our global economic systems transition into regenerative economies.&#x20;

![](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2Fop1GZMqJpV5ypA7Uslk1%2FPath%20to%20a%20Regenerative%20Civilization%20.png?alt=media\&token=3289bc48-5abb-4eee-b376-9adae2e21de8)

# What is Success?

## A regenerative culture&#x20;

A Regenerative culture is one that is actively regenerating the ecosystems we inhabit.

#### Regenerating our ecologies looks like:&#x20;

* Being able to drink wild water again! Actively and consciously enhancing the quality of our wild waters with targeted planting and restoration projects.&#x20;
* Growing the fertility of our soils, so that they grow more fertile and nutritional each year instead of less.&#x20;
* Increasing the quality of our air, seeking to replace the toxic fumes of tailpipes and smokestacks with the wild smells of meadows and forests. &#x20;
* Local food activation festivals where we gather to set up community gardens, food forests and other direct restoration projects.&#x20;
* Regenerating our ecologies would create environments that foster more diversity of life on our planet (reversing the extinction acceleration trend). For example, evidence is mounting that shows that the incredible diversity and life of the amazon happened precisely because of the humans stewarding those lands. Nature was made **more abundant and fertile** (ability to give life) because of the human inhabitants.&#x20;
* And so much more joy to be had as we heal together.&#x20;

#### Regenerating our socials systems looks like:

* Providing free (and paid) educational opportunities to reskill and support those seeking to join the transition and open-sourcing everything we can to remove participation barriers.&#x20;
* Creating economic systems that are directly governed by consenting participants. Where the "freedom to exit" is high and barriers to opt-into and out-of various social and economic systems are a basic human right.&#x20;
* Co-create economic systems that deliberately redistribute collective wealth and incentives for the wellbeing of people, planet and shared prosperity. Where the members of these systems govern directly what an economic system ought to prioritize. So, instead of an extreme minority using subsidies, government contracts, etc to enrich an even more extreme minority of society; we can instead have transparent, fraud resistant, and directly democratic financial systems.
* etc.

## We get what we measure

In order to build an economic system that automatically rewards and incentivizes regenerative actions, we need to improve how we measure what regeneration *actually is.*

{% hint style="info" %}
**QUEST**\
Help improve our measurement capacity and tools by adding new functionality to track meaningful metrics regarding regeneration.\
\
Build alliances with groups tracking these insights so that we have better information to evolve our economic systems with (e.g. to get better at directly compensating regenerative actions).\

### SEEDS Economy Dashboard

![Visit Live Dashboard&#x20;
There's still a lot of proposals to continue to improve our ever evolving dashboard as we find ways to track meaningful insights and guide our evolution.](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FnNCkzP95J0EhFYmGINtw%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=710ad23d-3768-43c4-8d5b-cc27980f6965)

   2. Gratitude flows (gratitude given & Seeds distributed)
   3. Governance insights (passed proposals, current proposals, active voters, total proposals passed, etc)&#x20;
3. **Planet**

   Where Seeds funding is going to support a diversity of Regenerative actions:

   1. &#x20;Education
   2. Land Care
   3. Local Food
   4. Reforestation
   5. Social Equality&#x20;
   6. Healthcare
   7. Healthy Water
   8. Depollution
4. **Prosperity**

   Finance and economic metrics:

   1. Current and historical price of Seeds
   2. Target price for "Go Live"
   3. Total Seeds in circulation and Seeds planted (out of circulation)
   4. Seeds sold from the Seeds Sale&#x20;
   5. Total Seeds distributed to Alliances, Campaigns, and Ambassadors

### Regional and Village Dashboards

We measure globally (the dashboard above) and we measure regionally (below dashboards).&#x20;

What we measure regionally can be more nuanced and culturally specific than what we measure globally.&#x20;

Regionally is where we can apply frameworks like [Meta Integral's MetaImpact model](https://www.metaintegral.com/), [Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics](https://doughnuteconomics.org/about-doughnut-economics) or others to track our impact.

![Meta Integral Impact and Doughnut Economics: This is an illustrative dashboard only.](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FW5jAvEggoF2obqXEjUOq%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=d8467f8d-83fe-493f-ac08-08e58fd535f6)

We can then use these models to measure and coordinate our resources locally towards subsidizing, financing, and encouraging a wide diversity of regenerative impact.

### SEEDS Regions

Regions within SEEDS can increase their ["Contribution Score"](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/) (which determines what share of the new Seeds, if any, are given to that region) by regenerating their regional ecologies and societies. In this way we create a planetary game where regions across the globe are collaborating to increase their regional regeneration.

This also create a generative positive feedback loop. As groups/ villages/ regions/ projects/ businesses who are the most regenerative with the funds they receive, will receive more funding to do more regeneration with.

# What is value?

## Shared stories create value

Bitcoin has value because people believe it has value (and the diverse community holds all manner of diverse and contradictory reasons as to why this is the case).

The US Dollar has value because people believe it has value (even more contradictions in beliefs here).

In short, our shared beliefs create "value" as it's our shared stories that decide what's valuable and what isn't (even if those beliefs are contradictory).

**When conducting systems change we're creating on the level of narrative and story where things are true here if enough of us decide they are. Especially when they come to human agreements like financial, governance, and organizational systems.**

Some off the most valuable work we're doing is getting clear on our shared agreements, narrative, and story and the "[foundations](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/0.-read-me-first-foundations/)" section is our ongoing effort to do just that.

## The value we're co-creating

The most valuable assets we're creating is "stories of shared agreement".&#x20;

As we continue to craft our constitution, design our economic protocols, build systems, structures, templates, guides, tools and more... **We're continually creating more complete agreements amongst ourselves** for the new systems that we're regularly bringing more of our social and economic lives into.&#x20;

As time passes folks may not even remember the moment we "fully transitioned" into regenerative economies and started meeting all of our needs within our new social structures (economies, villages, DHOs/DAOs, regional communities, etc).&#x20;

**Our story becomes more real as we continue to fill out the details of our story.**&#x20;

As we build new [economic](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/5.-regenerative-economic-system-tools), [organizational](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/4.-regenerative-organizing-tools), [cultural tools](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/6.-regenerative-culture-tools) we make our story more real.&#x20;

As we share and create [templates ](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/3.-templates-for-regenerative-action)for how to [coordinate our new organization's, ](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/libraries-and-templates/)we make our story more real.

As we share these possibilities with others and create systems for helping others learn about the tools of this renaissance, we make our story more real.

As we explore what it means to be a "Regenerative Culture" and discover new [rituals, celebrations, ceremonies, songs, memes, ideas, art](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/6.-cultural-tools/)... and share thes&#x65;**, we make our story more real.**

**The most valuable thing we're creating is a new story for those seeking one.**&#x20;

### Governed by the Citizens

If you're reading this, here is another active invitation to welcome you to actively participate in this learning journey.&#x20;

**The most important thing to always remember in SEEDS is that it's governed by all of us.**&#x20;

If we don't like something. If we thing something could be more generative, healing, prosperous, and otherwise better for people and our planet: then we are encouraged to take action to evolve it. To make our systems more generative.&#x20;

Our economic protocols need to be flexible and easy to adjust and tweak. Because, as a species, we don't yet know what's the most generative way to coordinate. [This is exactly why the SEEDS Economic system has been designed](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/2.-the-seeds-guide/) as an ecosystem of 'primitives' and 'settings' that provide a programmable economic system. This provides the Citizens a foundation for us to [build new economic realties with](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/). [So, that through direct governance the Citizens can adjust any economic protocol within their economy](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/3.-citizens-guide-and-the-regenerative-renaissance/) and tweak this system to best meet ours and our planet's needs.

### The market price of Seeds

The "market" is a decentralised tool for quantifying and measuring shared value. However, in highly experimental, speculative, and volatile markets like cryptocurrency - we find the market isn't the best tool for accurately tracking success.

We prefaced this section with "what is success" as there are a multitude of ways to track the value we're creating beyond the market price of the Seeds token.&#x20;

However, creating a sustainable financial system that folks are able to opt-into requires a steady bridge. [So, we explore how Seeds plays that role in more detail here. ](/read-me-first/buying-and-selling-seeds-why-what-how/why-seeds-and-what-are-they/why-are-seeds-valuable)

This serves as a reminder for us to avoid the trap of "incremental improvements" or "chasing hype" that may lead us towards improving the efficiency of the degenerative economic systems we have today. This would be a tragedy if we missed our opportunity for a systemic paradigm shift.&#x20;

This may happen if we focus too much on the degenerative cycles "bears" and "bulls" and to let them influence or direct the financial decisions we make as a community.&#x20;

# An economy in partnership with Earth

*We refer to Earth with a proper noun to remember that this Earth as a whole system is a living being. Just as our bodies are a co-creation of "non-human" life. Earth too is a being, co-comprised of a diversity of "non-earth" life that we're still fortunate to share this journey with.*

# Sustainable Technology

We can't build a regenerative economic system on degenerative technology.

## SEEDS itself is not a blockchain

The blockchain is just one of the tools used by the SEEDS community to store data in a fraud-resistant and transparent way.&#x20;

If better technology to secure information in a fraud-resistant way where members are able to directly govern and evolve these systems then our community is encouraged to adopt more regenerative technologies as they become available.

With this logic, SEEDS doesn't run it's own Blockchain. Instead SEEDS exists on a few blockchains, predominantly Telos.&#x20;

#### This means that SEEDS:

* **is not directly contributing to an increase in energy and material use** (the physical infrastructure) required to run a unique blockchain and only adds a margin representative of the actual actions processed within SEEDS.
* **does not have recurring marginal costs for maintaining our database** (such as Bitcoin which spends more than $10B USD a year to maintain the blockchain). Which means that there isn't a minimum number of Seeds that have to be bought each year in order to maintain the price to cover this expense (as is the case with every token that secures a blockchain). Instead the SEEDS economy only needs to buy and stake more TLOS (on the Telos network) should our economy grow to require more bandwidth (actions per second). Which means there is only a cost if recurring demand increases, and SEEDS is able to use some of the value gained from this increase in demand to reserve additional bandwidth.

## SEEDS is not Bitcoin

SEEDS builds on technology stacks that are ecologically intelligent and harmonious.&#x20;

### Bitcoin's footprint

![As of Jan 7, 2022](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FlLZa1NJytXgC83ecMQVF%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=14488bde-b8d7-4739-9788-55d85eedf98b)

Some cryptocurrency protocols, such as Bitcoin, receive a lot of bad press about their enormous energy consumption and this is the reason we didn't build on Bitcoin to begin with.

{% embed url="<https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption>" %}
See here for current usage.
{% endembed %}

It's important to clarify that SEEDS does not use Proof of Work (PoW) or, "Proof of Waste" as we like to call it, protocols.&#x20;

For those that don't know. It's PoW, not necessarily cryptocurrency or blockchain, that is responsible for the egregious energy consumption of Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies, as it's this protocol that creates endless energy consumption and demand.&#x20;

As of now, the majority of SEEDS protocols currently exist on Telos (it was chosen specifically for its focus on ESG (environment, sustainability, governance) and is extremely efficient as far as energy consumption and cost to maintain the decentralized network.&#x20;

![Energy is only consumed to actually run the network. Not to produce security as well (which is the role of PoW (Proof of Work) in blockchains like Bitcoin).](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FHugUZET1DaUoJbYk5KN3%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=79d6564b-9c37-4fb0-9d37-be2924b0851e)

## SEEDS is sequestering carbon (carbon negative)

SEEDS, as an ecosystem, has already sponsored and subsidized more tree planting in protected areas to drawdown our estimated carbon budget for several years, and we're just getting started!

Our goal of systemic regeneration will only come through carbon sequestration. This is a cornerstone of the SEEDS Economy.

![Tree planting by Forest Without Frontiers. One of SEEDS allies in direct regeneration. ](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FCOcInsG6q5jcv2dmy4V3%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=52eff3b2-18e6-4ef0-b174-3675267a48d5)

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/yCSsMNUvmN8>" %}

# SEEDS Role in Web3

SEEDS as a community, economy, and ecosystem is technology agnostic.&#x20;

We strive to use any existing open-sourced and aligned tools before we seek to build them ourselves and we seek to build in a collaborate, open-source, and interoperable way.&#x20;

SEEDS intends to be interoperable with any "layer 1" community (e.g. various blockchains or databases) that are aligned with a shared mission for economic regeneration.

***We seek to 'out collaborate the competition'. With the "competition" being the dominant economic and governance systems we were all born into.***

From this lens SEEDS aims to be compatible with a diversity of aligned protocols and "layer 1's" emerging in Web3.0.

![The image shows types of groups/teams collaborating in the Regenerative Renaissance on the top row. The middle layer is SEEDS ecosystem of protocols and tools. ### Contributor compensation

Fundamentally SEEDS is an economic system redesigning how we distribute value to those who give value. As an ecosystem we'll continue to improve how we recognize and reward contributions to the commons (such as updating this Wiki).

All contributions to the SEEDS Commons Wiki are [tracked through Gitbooks](/read-me-first/governance-and-contributing/contributing-to-the-knowledge-base) and these contributions can (and very likely will) be retroactively used to compensate contributors as we continue to build the systems that more easily reflect value to contributors (who weren't already in a role to create this Wiki).

# Who governs our Knowledge Base?

Since we all carry our own biases and world view and none of them alone are "right" Citizens need to be able to govern who is curating their knowledge base.&#x20;

So, in an effort for this knowledge base to most accurately reflect our shared values we:

1. regularly contribute our wisdom and perspectives to this knowledge base.&#x20;
2. curate this space well by selecting candidates who we collectively believe are best suited to do so and represent our collective voice.

We govern authority for who curates this space using badges & roles in the SEEDS Commons DHO (decentralised organisation).&#x20;

# Why Seeds and what are they?

### TL;DR

In short, buying Seeds right now is a way to support the SEEDS Commons work and gain a token of appreciation (the Seeds token) for your contribution which is also the currency within the SEEDS economy. If our efforts in creating a new economic system succeed - the Seeds currency will be the ["Yang" currency](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/5.-regenerative-economic-system-tools) within our economic system.

### Reclaiming sovereignty of our money

> "Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws." - Mayer Amschel Rothschild (banking family)

Central Banks have been used as tools to usurp the power of democratic countries and concentrate that power towards those that run the banks and money supply.&#x20;

Seeds is a financial tool designed to do the opposite - a new currency designed to redistribute wealth from these old systems into our new one by giving currency direct to contributors to the Regenerative Renaissance.

## Where do Seeds come from?

Pre [Go-Live,](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/4.-economic-roadmap/) there's only 2 ways that Seeds have come into circulation ("circulating" being the ability to buy, sell, trade, use in any way, etc). Someone has:

1. **Bought Seeds from the SEEDS Sale.**\
   \
   When you buy Seeds from [Joinseeds.earth](https://joinseeds.earth/buy-seeds) you're buying Seeds from the [SEEDS Commons](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/7.-the-seeds-commons) from a price set by the SEEDS Commons following the [original economics and sale model proposed by Hypha.](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/7.-initial-token-allocation-and-economics/) The Seeds commons uses a diversity of tokens (including tokens raised by the Seeds sale) \
   \
   **The SEEDS Commons does not hold national currencies.** When you buy Seeds using your credit/debit card then behind the scenes you're first buying cryptocurrency with your fiat from a regulated 3rd party, who then sends that crypto to the SEEDS Commons, who then sends you Seeds (this all happens automatically and on-chain). \
   \
   We do this to ensure that we're fully decentralized and will never require a legal entity nor bank account to coordinate our movement.<br>
2. **Earned Seeds from participating in a Campaign voted in by the Citizens of SEEDS**\
   \
   The only other way to get Seeds is by earning them from running or participating in one of the Regenerative Campaigns (like planting trees, etc) being propsed, voted-on, and run by the Citizens of SEEDS.

### Citizens are in full control

* The Citizens decide who is part of the SEEDS Commons.&#x20;
* The Citizens decide which campaigns get funded (and how many new Seeds to bring in to circulation with the proposals that are funded).&#x20;

## Who benefits?

#### **Bought Seeds from the SEEDS Sale?**&#x20;

The SEEDS Commons benefits from this as it helps to diversify the treasury the SEEDS Commons is using to compensate contributions to the Commons.&#x20;

**Bought Seeds from an exchange?**

You and whoever you bought them from (as you both swapped for the token you were wanting). Exchanges are were people go to buy and sell their Seeds, and you'll likely not know who exactly you're buying Seeds from. When you buy Seeds from exchanges you're buying Seeds from someone else who earned Seeds from passing a governance proposal or they bought them. This supports the various missions we're funding within SEEDS using our [decentralised governance systems](https://passport.joinseeds.earth/).&#x20;

## Swap dollars for real change

When you buy Seeds you’re taking your money out of the central bank currency systems that are subsidizing, rewarding, and financing the destruction of our communities and planet (from over [$5.4 TRILLION](https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidcarlin/2020/06/02/a-5-trillion-dollar-subsidy-how-we-all-pay-for-fossil-fuels/?sh=6b7d3ae37ea1) subsidizing oil and gas industries in a single year and over [$8 TRILLION](https://www.brown.edu/news/2021-09-01/costsofwar) the US spent on warfare and empire building in the Middle East alone).

#### When we use those national currencies we’re saying “yes” to:

* Bailing out banks and Wallstreet that gamble away people’s retirement funds and worse.
* Extreme concentration of wealth. As debt and interest concentrates wealth and central bank money tends to go to the already wealthy with [excessive government contracts](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/21/magazine/f35-joint-strike-fighter-program.html), [insider deals,](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/dec/20/nsw-approves-morrison-governments-600m-kurri-kurri-gas-fired-power-plant) and more.
* giving our power to decide how we coordinate at scale over to those who control the existing monetary systems.&#x20;

### When you buy Seeds you’re:

#### **1. Supporting change makers**

When you trade your fiat for Seeds you're helping support the movement, supporting bioregions transitioning to regenerative agriculture, supporting artists and movement builders leading the “Regenerative Renaissance” as this fiat is used as a bridge to support their contributions until we're able to meet all our needs within SEEDS.

> “So, buying Seeds is like donating to your favourite charity and buying into a more regenerative form of Bitcoin at the same time.” - Karen Hardison

You're supporting the transition to a Regenerative Civilization and putting your money in a more monetarily sound place.

#### **2. Opting-into a new economic system**

You’re voting with your money for a new economic system. The more value that leaves the fiat world into the SEEDS world, the more that people are voting "yes" to the regenerative economic systems we're creating here. When you swap your fiat for Seeds you’re helping create a bridge to a world where we will no longer need fiat to meet our needs.

#### **3. Joining a financial system where you have a direct voice**

SEEDS is decentralized, transparent and governed by the people! SEEDS restructures the financial incentives away from hoarding and degenerating our planet, to circulating the currency and regenerating our planet!

#### **3. Obtaining a "better than free" currency"**

There are no fees for using and transacting in Seeds. Further, using them can even earn you rewards! From the start you make an extra 3%+ revenue from your business as you’re no longer paying payment processing fees!

### SEEDS are backed by our economy

Central bank currencies are no longer backed by gold or other assets but instead by the economies they facility.&#x20;

The same is true for Seeds.&#x20;

Seeds are “backed” by the utility and size of our network and economy.&#x20;

In the early days this backing is fragile, which is why the price of each Seed starts off low to account for this risk and to reward those who come in early and help build more utility and grow the value of each Seed. As the economy matures and the risks reduce we may see this reflected in the price and liquidity (ability to buy and sell) of Seeds.

{% hint style="info" %}
Just as the Euro is backed by the economies that accept the Euro. Seeds are backed by the people, businesses, movements, villages, and communities who use them. SEEDS is backed by all the change-makers who come together to decide to create regenerative economic systems.
{% endhint %}

### Quick economic notes about Seeds:

1. During the "[pre go live](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/4.-economic-roadmap/)" phase of SEEDS, Seeds has a fixed max supply of 3.14B Seeds.\
   *As a comparison, in Jan 2021 Bitcoin is issuing* [*$36MM* ](https://www.the-sun.com/tech/3229334/how-many-bitcoins-left-mine/#:~:text=How%20many%20Bitcoins%20are%20mined,and%20each%20contains%206.25%20Bitcoins.)*(900 BTC/day \* $40,000) of new Bitcoin every single day.*
2. "[Go Live](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/4.-economic-roadmap/)" doesn't occur until the price of Seeds reach a minimum $0.80 with a target of $1.30-$2.00. It will stay a fixed supply currency until this point.\
   *There is no guaranteeing this price will happen! Just that price is one of the triggers that need to happen before Seeds is no longer a fixed supply currency. This just assures you that Seeds will remain a fixed supply currency until this price target is reached (and other "go live" targets laid out in the* [*Economic Roadmap.*](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/4.-economic-roadmap/)
3. Seeds can serve as a hedge against failing fiat currencies which the USD is currently inflating (losing value) anywhere from [3.5-12%](https://www.businessinsider.com/if-people-knew-the-actual-inflation-rate-it-would-crash-the-economy-2016-8)+ a year as [central banks create trillions of dollars](https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2021-central-banks-binge/#:~:text=Since%20the%20start%20of%20the,combined%20assets%20to%20%2424%20trillion.).

### Quick financial roadmap

![Video exploring this further.](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FWef6UXkXbA5AnxVmDQ9T%2FCopy%20of%20Pre-Post%20Go%20Live.png?alt=media\&token=91492fa6-867f-4fd2-a0b5-7970e2ebafec)

[Explore here for the detailed roadmap.](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/4.-economic-roadmap/)

1. **First phase:** grassroots movement building\
   \
   Seeds is fixed in supply, more scarce than Bitcoin to serve as a better hedge against failing fiat currencies and reduce the risks that would come with starting off Seeds as a dynamic supply currency. This also means that if Seeds succeeds as a currency then we'll see a redistribution of wealth towards all the Regenerators who supported SEEDS early on (just as early contributors to Bitcoin).
2. **Second phase:** a steady-state financial system\
   \
   Seeds evolves into a better-than-free, intrinsically stable and dynamic supply currency. A currency designed to maintain purchasing power and that gives control of any new currency directly to the people.&#x20;
3. **Third phase:** Regenerative economy by design\
   \
   We don't want to rely on good faith that Citizens will govern SEEDS in the best interests of our planet. So, we build in protocols that automatically reward regenerative actions and behaviors by people, businesses (or villages), and entire bioregional economic systems. [The Harvest ](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/2.-the-seeds-guide/)and [Contribution Score](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/3.-citizens-guide-and-the-regenerative-renaissance/) protocols in SEEDS are 2 examples of this.&#x20;
4. **Fourth phase:** yet to be co-created

{% hint style="info" %}
When you buy Seeds using central bank notes its a vote for this new system - when you sell Seeds its a vote for the old (recognizing we still need parts of the old system while we finish building alternatives).
{% endhint %}

### When you buy Seeds **you're not just investing in a product or service**

You're joining in a new economy (same as when you swap Pesos to Euros) guided by passionate, purpose driven, and dedicated people who have an existential need to see this through.

# Seeds: A tool for a steady-state financial system

![We don't want inflation nor deflation. We need balance.](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2Fdalyixk8JMoYwHUuVfHM%2FSeeds%20BTC.png?alt=media\&token=16f63ea4-30e3-468d-8b3a-da94ec21ac5b)

### **Central bank money concentrates wealth by:**&#x20;

**Fiat losing purchasing power.**&#x20;

That means that if you're not getting a promotion equal to or greater than the rate of inflation, then as a wage-earner, you're actually getting a demotion in pay year after year (which is one way the poor get poorer).&#x20;

The wealthiest avoid this trap (and the wealthier you are, the more you're able to avoid it, e.g. "accredited investor") through investing their wealth and making returns greater than inflation (e.g. why the system was more interested in bailing out Wallstreet than Mainstreet).

### **Fixed supply "sound money" cryptocurrency concentrates wealth by:**

**Crypto gaining purchasing power.**&#x20;

When the pendulum swings to the other extreme it's just as destructive. However, instead of concentrating wealth through inflation Bitcoin and others concentrate wealth through accumulation and appreciation (when the purchasing power of Bitcoin increases).&#x20;

The already wealthy are able to (and do) accumulate large sums of Bitcoin and grow their wealth even further. Those with more wealth are able to run more miners (to create more currency) to grow their wealth even further (a positive feedback loop that concentrates wealth)&#x20;

Satoshi Nakamoto (creator of Bitcoin) [owns \~5%](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/satoshi-nakamoto.asp#:~:text=Given%20that%20the%20maximum%20possible,definitely%20proven%20to%20be%20Nakamoto.) of all Bitcoin **that will ever exist** and companies (like Bullish, Microstrategy, etc) [own \~1%](https://businesscloud.co.uk/news/the-crypto-rich-list-who-are-the-worlds-richest-people-in-cryptocurrency/) of the entire supply of this "world reserve" currency that will ever exist. Imagine a single company or individual owning 5% of all reserve currencies?\
\
Bitcoin did the unthinkable and lead the way. It proved that we can create decentralised financial systems. But, it's not going to be the financial system we need to create regenerative economic systems with.

To prevent positive feedback loops that concentrate wealth (consistent inflation or deflation) we need a steady-state currency that's neither dramatically losing or gaining in purchasing power.

# Why are Seeds Valuable?

What gives Seeds utility? Why would people want to buy them? Some initial routes on what gives Seeds value.

### Better money

Seeds (the token and currency) after go-live is primarily designed as a 'medium of exchange' and 'unit of account currency'. It will be one of the first "flat" currencies (better stability than central bank money) and the first (that we know of) that will be free to use for payments (and [better than free for a variety of regenerative actions](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/)).

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF5aEd0d1SI>" %}
An intro to money and how Seeds compares to Gold, Dollars, and Bitcoin
{% endembed %}

However, the ecosystem is also bridging and consolidating. Once someone has been "onboarded into web 3" it's much easier for them to move around and find the community that best meets their needs. This is along the lines of what [Vitalik Buterin shared](https://old.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/rwojtk/ama_we_are_the_efs_research_team_pt_7_07_january/hrngyk8/), "the future is multichain" (and beyond blockchains).&#x20;

A future with many ecosystems where communities who share similar values and aims can gather where its best for them. Where moving between one ecosystem and the next is increasingly fluid and flexible.&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/kZlGE4hrAA8>" %}
A full high-level overview of the economic system of SEEDS
{% endembed %}

As all the current "competitors" for medium-of-exchange currencies (the various stable coins within web3) help grow the whole web3 ecosystem. Then they're helping people join the whole ecosystem where people can freely go where it's best for them. They may prefer to use a medium of exchange currency that's:

* Cheaper (Seeds is free to use);
* Faster (Seeds trade in <1 sec);
* Sharing a common vision for the world;
* governed transparently and directly by those who use it;&#x20;
* better-than-free for regenerative actions ([when supporting regenerative businesses](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/5.-economic-tools/tools-for-regenerative-economic-systems/), etc);&#x20;
* continually providing us more value as we continually evolve our economic system.&#x20;

### Crypto payment integration

{% hint style="info" %}
**QUEST**\
Looking for members to run an "Finance Weavers" guild to oversee integrating Seeds in payment apps and decentralised exchanges.
{% endhint %}

Crypto payment tools are many. Members within SEEDS are free to add Seeds to any crypto payment options (see the SEEDS Commons about covering costs).&#x20;

Once Seeds (that are free to use) are sitting next to options that cost (even if it's small), may see more use and adoption.&#x20;

#### Ideal medium of exchange

On top of being free to spend. During the post Go-Live phase Seeds is stabilizing in purchasing power (not verses depreciating currencies like the Dollar) which is also making it more advantageous for people to want to be paid in a currency that's not giving them an automatic demotion each year.&#x20;

#### Ideal unit of account

Seeds becomes a better tool to price our products and servicers in so that we don't have to continually spend our time adjusting and readjusting prices each year, becoming slaves to our calculators and spreadsheets (or worse, not making these changes and getting poorer each year).

#### This is how Seeds grows beyond go-live as the ideal medium of exchange and unit of account currency in a world full of tokens.

### Rainbow Seeds & Constant Currencies

Rainbow Seeds (constant and stable community currencies) are required to be backed by Seeds in order to have[ full functionality](broken://spaces/LyHiXbrp5fHx6gLjorGh) within the SEEDS economy.&#x20;

If more communities demand a value-stable and fee-free currency with an ecosystem of interoperability (wallets, etc) they can use - then this will increase demand for creating these regional currencies which will increase demand for Seeds.&#x20;

The first communities (and regenerative communities) may get Seeds from an alliance from the Citizens in order to back their own currencies.&#x20;

### SEEDS Decentralised Exchanges

![swap.seeds.money](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FH9qICFw1gPElVsBvYGv9%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=63fc34d9-c8d2-49b1-b9c4-097e9565dfb7)

When villages, organizations, or other groups within the SEEDS ecosystem launch their own tokens (for a wide variety of reasons) they can list their token for trade using one of SEEDS Decentralized Exchanges.\
\
Seeds is the counter token in every "pool" on an exchange. A pool holds an equal value of 2 tokens. So, if you want to add 100 Euro/Seeds of your Village token to an exchange you'd need to have 100 in Seeds and an equal value of your village token to do so. This model ensure that those who are trading in any of these new tokens can always convert them back to Seeds. \
\
This means as more projects list their tokens and demand for these tokens grow, the demand for the secondary token (Seeds) grows with them.&#x20;

*This is a standard growth model for the many decentralised exchange tokens of web3.*

**Exchange fees (should we choose to add them) are split between those who added the tokens into the pool and the SEEDS community directly.**

### More to co-create

This renaissance is all about us coming together and creating a new story together. It's up to all the members of SEEDS to co-create new ways to build value together and create value for our shared ecosystem.

*For example, if the Citizens decide we want our currency to take fees because we all prefer a rent-seeking model as we decided that was a more generative method to sustain a financial system, then we can do so.*

"Web3" and "crypto" is getting a lot of well deserved attention on where the flows of value are going. Who benefits. Is our revolution really just trading out one class of economic elites (bankers) for another (crypto investors)?&#x20;

### Questions to consider with a crypto launch.

1. **How does wealth concentrate?** If the project succeeds will early contributors be made into millionaires, billionaires, trillionaires, etc? Are there any caps to how much early backers are able to benefit? How open is participation (are there "private sales")? Are there any caps to how much anyone can buy to limit concentration?
2. **How will that wealth be used?** Will it be used for regeneration (and supporting local regenerative projects)? Or, will it be used for degeneration and excessive consumption (mega-mansions and yachts)?
3. **Do protocols encourage continual distribution or concentration?** What economically happens over time? Are tokens continually being destroyed or created? If someone owned 5% of all the tokens one year, and all they did was hold onto these tokens for a year - would they have more, less, or equal to their original 5%?&#x20;

In degenerative economic systems some of these questions are seen as taboo. Such as, asking how pooled value is spent (e.g. asking Jeff Bezos how he plans to spend his billions before deciding to invest in Amazon).&#x20;

However, we're working on the level of economic change geared for regeneration. So, these questions are incredibly important. If the value that SEEDS captures is directed towards endless energy consumption (Bitcoin), or concentrating wealth (Ethereum with the upcoming deflationary upgrade), or helping venture capitalists make a few more billions (far too many projects).&#x20;

One of our tasks here is redesigning how value flows throughout an economy. So, it's incredible important that we consider who benefits from success.

## Steps SEEDS took&#x20;

1. **No private sale and members of SEEDS have a maximum of 100k Seeds they can buy each week.**
2. **Decentralised & transparent launch team** \
   Hypha, the team that build and launched SEEDS 1.0, is a decentralised organisation (DAO) that only received a payout for that work **after the work was done through a proposal to the Citizens of SEEDS and all money has been transparently governed since** ([see everything Hypha funded here](https://dho.hypha.earth/#/)).
3. **Citizen Governed**\
   SEEDS was governed by the Citizens from inception and have been in direct control of all Seeds (the token) issuance since inception. &#x20;
4. **No fixed supply**\
   So, it's not possible to buy up 5% of the total supply and the extreme concentrations of wealth that would occur if 5% of a "reserve currency" could be owned by a single group (as is the case with Satoshi and Bitcoin).
5. **Evolutionary currency**\
   First phase where the currency is rewarding risk and early adoption (fixed supply currency). Then a Citizen-Governed transition where the currency shifts to steady state. This sets a considered period and cap to the wealth that can concentrate to early contributors to SEEDS.&#x20;
6. More steps can be found in the full overview: [SEEDS Initial Tokenomics](https://explore.joinseeds.earth/1.-seeds-foundations-start-here/7.-initial-token-allocation-and-economics/)

# "Is SEEDS a Ponzi Scheme?" response

> **"All crypto projects are Ponzi schemes until proven otherwise." - Adage for the crypto age**

**Rightfully so, a lot of Crypto has been called a "Ponzi Scheme" and other frauds. This is likely because the Cryptocurrency scene is full of them.**&#x20;

What follows is one perspective addressing this topic to help you research and make up your own mind about this question.&#x20;

### **Some on-chain facts for you to make up your own mind about SEEDS and if it's indeed a Ponzi Scheme.**

[Rieki Cordon](https://app.gitbook.com/u/kiImmtKiKtSldW1qxV4uV2NlMb22) here. I've been with SEEDS since the very early days, my role was to create maps, articles, protocols, designs, and videos - which may come off as if this is **my** thing as I'm all over the place.

However, it's important to note that I deserve only a small fraction of the credit for this. It's taken a global team of dedicated humans to pull together all of their skills and ideas to make this hum the way it has.&#x20;

I wrote this response after seeing my name next to "unregulated Ponzi scheme, with no transparency, run by this guy named Rieki".&#x20;

This didn't feel great especially since my intention in all of this is to create a more better world to live in. So, I took the time to write out this response, mostly as a way to process my feelings.&#x20;

### "If it sounds too good to be true, its a scam"

While this is almost always true, it's not always the case. Especially when we're living in systems where exploitation is the default. Untrustworthy financial systems, political schemes, environmental decay, rampant fraud and abuse by the powers that be... Fraud is everywhere.

However, if we take this belief too far then we prevent ourselves from ever creating anything better if we don't first believe it's possible.

For the remainder of this article I'm going to discuss why SEEDS would be a very poorly designed Ponzi or other scheme.

## Transparency <a href="#transparency" id="transparency"></a>

For any Ponzi to work the truth (the fraud) needs to be hidden from the participants. Otherwise it doesn't work.

What's been done since the beginning is to make **literally everything transparent**. All meetings, finances, governance decisions, team members, allies, EVERYTHING, is public. You can see literally everything Hypha as an organization does (the organization that has received a majority of funding from SEEDS... However, this was also written while SEEDS is evolving to add the SEEDS Commons and replace Hypha) here [dho.hypha.earth](https://dho.hypha.earth/) and here [Discord](https://discord.gg/cDbpMFVjM3) (where funds go, how decisions are made, all discussions, etc) and see how Hypha uses the funds it's earned from SEEDS. Every Commons organization (those who people are likely buying Seeds from) within SEEDS will operate this way.

### No need for an audit

We don't need an audit because everything is public (you only need an audit if you can't see yourself and need another organization to look for you).&#x20;

However, transparency is only useful if people know where to go looking and if you know how to easily audit yourself...

So, if you don't know how to search a blockchain - below is a video helping you, so you can go and see for yourself too and not have to trust anyone:

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/bo7uVwbqyzo>" %}
Links to most relevant accounts can be found in the video notes.&#x20;
{% endembed %}

The video notes link to all financial accounts and show you how to find them so you can see where all the money goes and how the SEEDS Commons organizations use all the funds from the SEEDS Sale (when you buy Seeds from joinseeds.earth).

## Hypha Stake <a href="#hypha-stake" id="hypha-stake"></a>

Hypha definitely has a stake in SEEDS as it received 20% of the initial supply of Seeds (which will continue to shrink to only be a small fraction of the total supply going forward should we succeed). However, these Seeds are locked until after "go live" which doesn't occur until SEEDS becomes a more mature economy and anyone who's bought Seeds has already benefitted and had a chance to exit (this removes the ability for Hypha to "dump" on buyers).

**So, Hypha has no way to "cash out" on anyone buying Seeds right now (making this a pretty poorly designed Ponzi... Since the point of Ponzi schemes is to cash out early and often).**

Hypha members will only be able to do so well after anyone else who wants to leave has an opportunity (as high liquidity is a prerequisite for "go live" - thus giving everyone who bought Seeds an easy opportunity to leave should they choose to).&#x20;

So, those trading their other 'money tools' (USD, Euro, Bitcoin, etc) for Seeds are in a privileged position to Hypha (the exact opposite of what a Ponzi requires to benefit those running it).

## Don't buy Seeds if you don't understand! <a href="#dont-buy-seeds" id="dont-buy-seeds"></a>

Do not to spend any money buying Seeds if you don't understand it and don't **completely** get it.&#x20;

The point is to **experiment** with and build new economic systems that can actually meet our needs and start to address humanity's crises. I can't say this enough, I realise it's an audacious and ridiculous goal - but I'm not sure if anything less is actually going to help humanity right now\...

If it works, Seeds becomes a useful day-to-day currency and we don't care what the exchange rate back to Central Bank currencies are (as we build alternatives to those exploitative systems).

We play our part by making ALL the software and learning open-source to best support this aim.&#x20;

Another reason this would be a poor Ponzi Scheme is we're actually using the money to develop open-source technology (not embezzling it) that anyone can use to build new economies with.&#x20;

## "Too good to be true" <a href="#too-good-to-be-true" id="too-good-to-be-true"></a>

All the "too good to be true" promises only **seem** too good to be true because we've all been encultured to accept a monumental fraud. Central Banks created over 10 TRILLION USD worth of money a few years following the 2020 pandemic!

Where did all this money go? Did you get a say whether this money should be created or not? Did you at least get a proportional amount (you didn't)?

Central Banks could make and keep all the promises that SEEDS suggests. They could create a "better than free" currency (e.g. giving all people who use the currency a share of the new money these banks create - e.g. "better than free"). They could finance local food systems, reforestation, and all the rest of the things that our civilization requires to thrive. They haven't been, but that's exactly what SEEDS has been financing this whole time. And we're only getting more effective at doing so.

If Seeds replaces central banks as preferred currencies (and it only needs to do this in a single community to succeed for that community) then it can have the power that central banks wield.&#x20;

Then instead of using that money to prop up Wall Street, give mega bailouts to massive companies (that in turn give massive bonuses to executives), doubling the wealth of billionaires since the pandemic, spending Trillions on warfare, trillions subsidizing oil and gas, etc, etc... we can instead create our own currency and  fund all the things humanity actually needs to thrive instead of what we're currently funding.&#x20;

It's a fairly simple premise, but a **monumental task** to get us there. Though, I'm confident we can do it, because almost everyone wants this, we just need to get beyond that barrier where people feel it's too difficult to even try. We have to try.

## A Ponzi until proven otherwise! <a href="#a-ponzi-until-proven-otherwise" id="a-ponzi-until-proven-otherwise"></a>

Think of SEEDS and any other crypto as a Ponzi Scheme until you're proven otherwise and never invest in any project that you don't fully understand and never spend more than you're willing to lose.

I realize doing this due diligence for SEEDS requires a lot of time - though for the full picture of **exactly** how SEEDS can accomplish the goals its set are laid out in [our foundations. ](/read-me-first/ecosystem-overview/1.-seeds-foundations)

As rightfully noted here - it's a serious task to take on to build a new economic system and I welcome anyone to point out the flaws in approach directly in any of the [SEEDS comms channels. ](/read-me-first/more-key-resources/communication-channels)

### Central Bank money: The original Ponzi <a href="#why-i-took-the-time-to-tell-you-all-this" id="why-i-took-the-time-to-tell-you-all-this"></a>

Seeds, and crypto as a whole, are more easily seen as a giant Ponzi Scheme if you think the future of money is Central Bank money.

If your goal is to grow your Euros, Yen, or Dollars; Seeds is a scam, as not everyone will be able to grow their Central Bank money and exit the same.

If your goal, however, is to exit the central bank system and create a new economic system; and you know the future of civilization is built on top of Web3; then crypto as a whole is no longer a scam, it's the foundation to new Civilizations and Central Bank money is just a dying relic, dying along with the previous age of centralized command-and-control structures. \
\
Where Crypto, Web3. and our wider movement could improve upon is on the distribution mechanics of money-on-money and especially governance-on-governance. Meaning, we need to evolve beyond the endless Ponzi schemes, Rug Pulls, and other frauds that are rampant.&#x20;

Meaning, throughout much of Crypto we built a direct pathway for those who own piles of Central Bank money - to trade their old-world power for new-world power. When governance tokens are able to be bought, we just allowed our new financial systems to be governed by the previously powerful.\
\
As a movement we need to continue to focus on using airdrops, earndrops, aligned token swaps, etc. as distribution mechanisms that don't just hand over our citizen-governed economic systems to the previous powers that were. This is why SEEDS "Voice token" aren't able to be traded (so money can't directly buy voice).

There's no reason we should build a free and open-source financial system and willing give it over to Wallstreet (as the wider Crypto trend seems to be going).&#x20;

**Instead we need to make sure we're redistributing wealth and reversing inequality with this transition technology.**

This is exactly what SEEDS has been focused on doing, ensuring the regenerators of the world are the first to get Seeds (the currency). Which is why we've been focusing on campaigns and Citizen governed processes to distribute Seeds and not just hype, speculation, and exchange listings.&#x20;

![Some of the many faces of Crypto](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FpybU8vaHaaxuOoU5yH43%2FSome%20of%20the%20many%20faces%20of%20web%203.png?alt=media\&token=9a80b3bb-537a-4f9f-be19-6f6e5050f804)

The idea that **we CAN create a new type of civilization** and we don't need the permission of those running the current systems to do so, is all that keeps me sane...&#x20;

It may not work, but it's the only choice I have to build a world worth living in and I'm here to commit my life to this journey - unless I find a better way to create a regenerative economy - this is it for me!&#x20;

I’d love to hear if you know of a better way and let's then work together to make that path happen! \

Thanks for reading this far.&#x20;

# Setting up a Seeds auto purchase plan

This is for those that have been asking if the sale contract can receive more than your weekly buy limit and just pay it out weekly; or, for those who are wanting to make routine weekly purchases.&#x20;

This would have been difficult for us to code directly into the site (and we're focused more on building regenerative economy protocols and not tools like this) so, we have a work around.

If you don't want to have to remember to buy Seeds each week you can set up automatic weekly purchases that you set up once and you're done.

### Step 1

Enter your account name

Chose Bitcoin&#x20;

Discover the dollar amount you’re able to buy each week

Copy “your” Bitcoin address

Now that you know the maximum you can buy each week (so you don’t set up a payment higher than this number) and you have your Bitcoin address you’re ready to move on to step 2.

### Step 2 Go to either:&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://www.swanbitcoin.com>" %}
Swan Bitcoin is a service expressly built with automatic purchases in mind.
{% endembed %}

#### [SWAN BITCOIN ](<https://www.swanbitcoin.com/ >)– BEST FOR U.S. RESIDENTS&#x20;

#### [BITPANDA](https://www.bitpanda.com/en) – BEST FOR EUROPEANS&#x20;

#### [KRAKEN ](https://www.kraken.com/en-us/)– A BACKUP INTERNATIONAL OPTION (IF THE ABOVE 2 FAIL)

And set up a plan to automatically buy Bitcoin and for it to go to your above address. Then each time you purchase Bitcoin and it goes to your wallet it will be converted into Seeds and sent to automatically to your account.

*Select a USD amount less than your maximum weekly purchase limit.*

### Step 3

Now that you don’t have to worry about buying Seeds each week. Take the time you saved to plant a garden and enjoy knowing that it’s all going to be taken care of for you!

# Who's leading?

SEEDS is an open economic and governance system for all of us to build upon and use to empower the variety of movements, communities, and initiatives we’re all a part of and deeply passionate about.

#### So then, Who's the leader of SEEDS? The leader in any decentralised movement is the one who knows the next step.&#x20;

In SEEDS there are many next steps for us to take together, and we can have just as many leaders as we have opportunities.

Those who’ve taken the lead to set up community initiatives, such as the SEEDS Commons - along with the Renaissance Explorers, Star DHO, Samara Trust, Hypha, and MoM DHO are all leaders in SEEDS. Those of us on the ground serving this movement in all the different ways (planting trees and community gardens, helping onboard regenerative businesses into SEEDS, etc) are all leaders in SEEDS.&#x20;

**Anyone who takes initiative to&#x20;*****lead*****, in our decentralised economy, becomes a leader.** Leaders gain more influence the more impactful their actions are, and the more others are inspired by their initiative and guidance.

## You’re a leader when you take lead

When you take ownership and responsibility, whether it's a gap, a problem, an opportunity, or something that excites you - and take action yourself or, connect with others to share in the joy of making it happen!

In decentralised movements, leaders are many. This is how they are more resilient than the centralised movements, with strong charismatic leaders, of history. For when those centralised leaders inevitably fall, those movements fall with them.

### Facilitators

Amongst our leaders we have facilitators who are taking leadership to assist others in stepping into their own positions of leadership and responsibility (the ability to respond) to give rise to more leaders.

Our community is blessed with many incredible facilitators and leaders and this is why we’ll succeed-- because we don’t have just one leader!

### Thoughts on decentralised leadership from Rieki - one of the many facilitators within SEEDS

During my journey with you all I’ve enjoyed some of my time leading various initiatives, some of my time following others lead, and some of my time facilitating - and I believe now that when I’ve swapped between those roles I’ve created some confusion, tension, and concern. Sometimes when I step into leading an initiative myself - I think it comes off as if I’m trying to be **“The Leader”**.&#x20;

I wanted to write this to share a bit more of my perspective and some paradigm shifts I’ve experienced during my attempt to pass the initial SEEDS 2.0 governance proposal (which failed).

I noticed that the economics of SEEDS may not have been serving our movement, or providing the potential support and momentum it otherwise could.

Because of my deep connection, awareness, and passion with the economic story (which is only one story in our movement); I took the lead to craft a proposal, build a plan, bring in some key wisdom from other members and bring the idea and plan to the community. I aimed to model a pathway and process (for how to take lead in SEEDS) that I hope many others emulate (to bring more proposals for evolving SEEDS) to bring the wholeness of our diversity here.

#### Summarising some critiques to this project:

“Why is ‘The Leader’ of SEEDS focusing so much on economics, when they forgot X, Y and Z? We’re so much more important than an economy, how do they not see this?”

“This proposal is lacking because it’s only focusing on 1 part. I’m losing faith in SEEDS because ‘The Leader’ seems more focused on sound economics than the community”.

Etc...

I think part of these critiques stem from my delivery of the project. I didn’t spend enough time elaborating that this project is only addressing 1 perspective (and not the many perspectives that we need to address). I didn’t spend enough time sharing that I’m just leading 1 area of our evolution and that we’d need more leaders to lead the other parts that are clearly missing. I took this awareness for granted and because of my naivety I was completely surprised by the response to my project.

**I think that (for some) I was being seen as “THE Leader” and exerting my will over others opposed to being seen as “just another leader” taking charge of executing on a problem and opportunity.**&#x20;

I believe my delivery only supported this false narrative, and it was a misguided attempt at trying to inspire. For this, I deeply apologise. I realise that my role as “map maker” over the years, all the videos and articles I’ve written and the role I’ve taken in crafting the economics and guide start to paint a picture as if I was “The Leader”. Yet, that’s not how SEEDS is designed and it’s not how it actually is.

I’m not “The Leader”. I don’t have the authority to change SEEDS without the permission of the Citizens (and getting buy-in from other influential leaders). Since SEEDS launched I’ve voted down almost as many proposals as I’ve voted up, and most of the ones I’ve voted down have passed; while simultaneously at least the last 4/6 proposals I’ve proposed to SEEDS have failed.&#x20;

I say this, because I want you all to know that SEEDS HAS NO LEADER. And if it did, it’s clearly not me! Or, at least I don't have the authority to make changes that a leader might have. **This is exactly as it needs to be.** SEEDS has many leaders (and we see them everywhere, many are just getting into their groove and stepping into their power and this is really exciting)**!**

#### SEEDS needs more leadership (it always will), it needs more of us willing to take action and responsibility for what we see to guide the growth of this movement. This is by design as SEEDS is a deliberately developmental economy, where it helps us all mature, develop, and evolve and for some of us, that means stepping into leadership roles.

When we see an opportunity, that is an invitation to take lead on seeing that opportunity through. SEEDS is designed so that you don’t need to ask permission to act (unless you want community resources, in which case you need to make a proposal and then it’s up to the Citizens or relevant members to fund that proposal or not).

But, if we fall into old patterns of expecting others to take lead when we're being called to - then we’re just going to cultivate the conditions of the society we’re trying to leave behind, where a minority are in control and the majority are just being manipulated into following.

I reject that story, and don’t want to duplicate that story here. I believe the majority can be leaders, even if we’re just leading our own actions and responsibilities:

* If you want to post an article to the library that helps grow the SEEDS narrative, you can (and many are!).
* If you want to launch a new org and seek public funds to support that org, you can (and many are doing so with the SEEDS Commons now!).&#x20;
* If you want to help build with one of the existing organisations you can make a quest or contribution proposal and see if one of those organizations would like to have you.

**SEEDS is designed without A Leader** - specifically so that we can ALL be leaders (not so that we crumble into the tragedy of the commons with no-one wanting to take responsibility - and the majority expecting a minority to lead us).

A paradigm shift was around my frustration and overwhelm for how the Relaunch/Fork project has been received so far. I got sad, angry and frustrated when I heard criticisms that didn’t offer a solution. When I saw more comments and complaints about how I presented the project - over support and enthusiasm to improve the proposal and help us solve our problems and make this better. I started to get depressed and lose enthusiasm when I noticed there was more energy resisting action then there was energy willing to move us forward.

But, my paradigm shifting realisation was that all the emotions, criticism (of my approach and the proposal itself) and more was all because we have a wonderful community here that **actually cares**!!!

Apathy, no response, or blind trust in the project would have all been so much worse!!!

When I realised this, **my frustration transformed into deep gratitude and joy for what we've all created here** and how far we've come these years. I then was able to realise that all that frustration was coming because you all know that SEEDS is decentralised, yet my approach was coming off as if I was trying to be “The Leader '' opposed to being just “A Leader” and this approach was rejected. I deeply appreciate this, and I wanted to write this to clarify that you are all right!

## My next invitation is to deeply consider these questions.

Do we want a movement where more people are taking leadership? Where more of us are encouraged and supported when we pour ourselves into taking leadership and responsibility to craft plans and coordinate evolutions? A community where we encourage those stepping into leadership roles, because we need many leaders, opposed to criticising and discouraging our leaders - because we don’t want to become a centralised movement and we resist those playing that role? This is something I really want to bring awareness to. I’ve noticed an increasing tendency towards criticising those who take action over encouraging and nourishing those brave and generous enough to do so. I've seen this happen with other communities (and it’s literally a CIA infiltration tactic to disrupt movements - for them to fake membership in a movement to just criticise every action someone tries to take, to use grandstanding tactics, and holier-than-thou stances to halt progress) once it becomes easier to criticise those taking action than it is to take action the movement dies as it is unable to move (which is everything a “move-ment” is meant to do) and achieve its purpose (as people taking the lead become hurt, bruised, burnout, and scared to act).

We’ve harmed many of our leaders and some have stepped away (maybe we can reach out and give them love?).

A movement or project only fails when the leaders or core team refuse to carry on, whether through burnout or otherwise. SEEDS will fail if the leaders burn out and no one is left to lead or carry on. An invitation: If you're not leading, then your role could be to care for those who are leading. To support them, care for them, and nourish them. We need to care for our leaders - otherwise we’ll fail.

## Support our leaders

Another invitation to be extra kind and supportive to those who are brave enough to put themselves out there and take the lead here. It's scary, it's difficult and it's challenging. Our leaders here could use our support. Too many of our incredible leaders here have burnt out from the responses to their efforts here. Again, it's worth stating that these types of responses (criticism without support or offer to help improve) are literally in the CIA playbook for how to disrupt a movement.&#x20;

![](https://913016091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FO5VF53ZNmw2pxfC6JGDm%2Fuploads%2FJ0G7PlpBsFbanlQXKTCm%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=f5e0a57e-48a8-4c6a-9bb3-2ab5e231bede)

Let’s not do that to ourselves. Please be kind, loving and supportive to those who are putting their hearts and hands on the line to show up and help us thrive. If you see something that could be improved, offer to help improve it (and follow through with that offer) opposed to just criticising without support (as this only demoralises our leaders).

## Intentionally Rotate Leadership

A final invitation for an ecosystem pattern. Leading is challenging, fulfilling and growth-inducing work. It's also hard work!&#x20;

For us to avoid burnout I suggest a pattern of intentionally rotating leadership roles - or better, rotate entire organisations who are leading an effort within SEEDS.

For example, multiple teams/DHOs could be in charge of facilitating movement building (giving support to new alliances, running ambassador academy, etc) but, instead of them all operating at the same time, they could each mirror a pattern of 3 months external and 3 months internal work. E.g. one team could take up the work of movement building for 3 months and at the next Regenerative Roundtable they pass off their duties to the other team/DHO and then go into a 3 month "inner work" phase where they recover, realign, rest and evolve their team processes as they get ready for their next 3 month shift. This way as a whole ecosystem we're "always on" and getting a lot done "out there" without ever burning out - all while giving plenty of time for the vital interpersonal, transformative and Internal work within.
